How to Protect Diecast Cars From Dust and Damage

How to Protect Diecast Cars From Dust and Damage

Diecast cars are made to be looked at, not hidden away. But a collection left exposed to dust, sunlight, frequent handling, and unstable storage can slowly lose the crisp, considered feeling that made you collect in the first place.

Protection is not one dramatic purchase or one intense cleaning day. It is a series of quiet decisions: where the cars live, how often they are handled, and whether each model has a place of its own. Here is a practical way to keep a 1:64 collection looking cared for while still enjoying it every day.

Start by reducing exposure, not by cleaning more

Dust is easiest to manage before it settles. An enclosed display case can reduce the day-to-day exposure that comes with an open shelf, especially in rooms with traffic, textiles, pets, or an open window nearby. It will not remove the need for care entirely, but it means less frequent cleaning and less contact with the model.

Choose a display position away from obvious dust paths: beside a door, directly under an air vent, or next to a workspace that produces paper or fabric fibres. Give the collection a stable home rather than moving models in and out every week.

Keep the display away from direct sun, heat, and moisture

Direct sunlight can fade printed cards, decals, and coloured surfaces over time. Heat can also affect plastic elements, tyres, and the adhesives used in some packaging or display materials. A bright room is fine; a long period of direct sun is not.

Place cases where the light is indirect, and keep them clear of radiators, heating vents, and humid areas. If you use lighting around a display, choose low-heat LEDs and leave enough distance for air to circulate.

Give each model room to breathe

Crowding is one of the quiet causes of damage. Cars that touch one another are more likely to pick up paint rubs, bent mirrors, or small marks when the case is opened. A little space makes the collection easier to see and makes individual models easier to lift without touching the surrounding cars.

Think in small groups rather than one large pile: a racing era, a city, a manufacturer, a colour story, or simply the models you want to revisit most. The display becomes clearer, and handling becomes more intentional.

Clean less often — and clean with intention

When dust does appear, start gently. Use a clean, soft anti-static brush or a hand air blower designed for cameras; avoid strong compressed air, which can push loose dust into tight gaps or dislodge delicate parts. For the case itself, use a microfiber cloth made for acrylic and a cleaner that is safe for acrylic surfaces.

Do not use paper towels, household glass cleaners, or rough cloths on clear acrylic: they can leave fine scratches or residue. If a model needs closer attention, hold it by the base or tyre area where possible, over a clear soft surface, and avoid repeated contact with printed graphics.

Store the off-display collection properly

Not every car needs to be on view at once. Cars waiting for their moment should be stored upright in a clean, dry place away from temperature swings. Keep original packaging if it helps protect the model, and avoid stacking heavy items directly on top of carded pieces or loose cars.

For a collection that rotates, keep a simple inventory: a note of the theme, model, brand, or story you want to show next. Rotation can make a modest collection feel alive without asking you to buy more space all at once.

Build a display that can grow with you

A good display does more than keep dust away. It makes the collection easier to understand, easier to care for, and more rewarding to return to. Begin with the cars you value most, then add in a way that keeps the whole collection visually calm.

This is where LUXEMARK takes a different view of the ordinary display case. Protection is the baseline; the wider purpose is to give each model a setting, a story card, and a place in a growing personal exhibition. A backdrop can establish the world around a car. An exhibit card can preserve the reason it matters. As new pieces arrive, the system can expand without turning into a row of unrelated boxes.

Care is part of the pleasure

A well-kept 1:64 collection does not need a large room. It needs a clear point of view. Reduce exposure, handle with care, and let each group of cars say something when you look at it. Protection then becomes less of a storage problem and more of a small collecting ritual.

Once the cars are protected, the next question is how you want the collection to read. Explore our guide to displaying 1:64 diecast cars for layout and theme ideas.

A standard acrylic case stores a model. A LUXEMARK display gives it a place, a context, and a story.

THE EXHIBIT CARD

Give every car a place in the exhibition.

A physical exhibit card can capture the model, era, automotive culture, collection theme, inspiration, or your own private collection number.

Together, the model, story backdrop, and exhibit card create a display worth returning to—not simply a box on a shelf.
